Sustainability is critical to conserving our natural environment and resources along with managing climate change. There are many ways you can help reduce your impact on our environment. Click here to see some ideas supplied by the Moreton Bay Regional Council.
Kumbartcho Sanctuary is trying to be an example of how a sustainable approach to resources and the environment can be achieved.
Rainwater Tanks
The rainwater that falls on the Kumbartcho-Barn is collected in ten 2,000 litre and two 5,000 litre rainwater tanks. This water is used in the Pine Rivers Community Nursery and H2O Catchment Services to reduce our use of potable water.
Rebates for the purchase of rainwater tanks are available from the State Government.
Solar Electricity Generation
In July 2008 Kumbartcho Sanctuary Community Volunteers arranged the installation of 12 solar panels through a local business, Springers Low Voltage Specialists. The installationgeneratesan average ofeight kilowatts of green power per day. Kumbartcho Sanctuary would like to thank Moreton Bay Regional Council for a $10,000 Community Assistance Grant to help fund this project along with grants fromthe Federal Government.
Kumbartcho Sanctuary would also like to thank NRMA for their financial support to create a public awareness presentation that can be viewed at Osprey House,on the use of solar energy.
Toilets and Taps
All toilet facilities are dual-flush to reduce water use and taps have fitted with diffusers to reduce water flow. Rebates for the purchase of dual-flush toilets are available from the State Government.
Garbage
Kumbartcho Sanctuary recycles all paper, cardboard, plastic and glass material using the Council "Yellow" bins.
Mulch
All of the plants at Kumbartcho Sanctuary are mulched using recycled plant material from the Moreton Regional Council. Rebates for the purchase of mulch are available from the State Government.
