The Community Nursery of Pine Rivers Shire was established in 1997
by Bunya Community Association Inc. (BCA) and Grovely Association
of Students (GAS) with support from the Pine Rivers Shire Council
(PRSC). Concerns for the rapid decline of local wildlife habitats
and corridors unified these three groups and the concept of a community
nursery was born. At that time the main objective for the nursery
was to involve local community in indigenous plant species propagation
and natural area rehabilitation activities.
The nursery development was based on a $5,000 budget, utilization of existing structures, materials found on site, as well as donations from various groups and individuals. Majority of the construction work was undertaken by the community volunteers and members of the GAS with funding and some material support provided by the PRSC.
At first the nursery was managed by a joint steering committee consisting of nominated representatives from the BCA and GAS. The main concern of this group was to provide project direction, progress evaluation and volunteer coordination.
