"Gum Trees for Koalas" Campaign 2007

Sponsored by

The Moreton Bay Regional Council, Pine Rivers Community Nursery and Koala Action Pine Rivers Inc. invite your School/Community Group to participate in the 2008, “Gum Trees for Koalas” fundraising campaign which will coincide with Save the Koala month in September.

One of the major reasons local koala populations are diminishing is because of loss of habitat. If we do not put Eucalypts back into Koala Corridor areas now our wonderful local koala population will soon disappear.

Our aim is to involve schools and community groups in the Moreton Bay Regional Council area, and use the campaign not only as a way to get gum trees in the ground but also as a fundraiser for the groups themselves.

  • The Campaign will start with a poster competition to raise initial awareness of the Gum Trees for Koalas Campaign. Children will design a poster, and one will be chosen to promote the campaign.
  • During the last 4 weeks of term 3 schools/community groups will run a fundraiser similar to the format of a chocolate drive. Students will take home a sponsorship sheet and ask family and friends to sponsor a Gum Tree for $2. Each $2 sponsorship will guarantee a Gum Tree will be planted in the ground by our coordinating team.
  • $1 from each tree sponsored will stay with the school/community group. The other $1 will go to the Community Nursery to fund the propagation of the trees. All sponsored trees will then be in credit at the Nursery for plantings in the Shire by Koala Action Pine Rivers, other community groups, corporate groups and other revegetation projects that are deemed suitable. Each school will be invited to plant a Koala Food Garden in the grounds of the school to highlight the project to the school community using some of the sponsored trees.
  • Prizes will be awarded to the winner of the poster competition, the school/community group who’s student wins the poster competition, the student in each participating school/group who sponsors the most trees, and the school/group which sponsors the most trees. We anticipate selected businesses will be corporate sponsors of the campaign.
  • Now in its fifth year, “Gum Trees for Koalas” has become an annual event and gives us a pool of Eucalypts to revegetate Koala Corridors throughout the region.
